Incurable lung disease characterized by
disabling breathlessness. Progressive loss of
the thin walls dividing the air spaces
(alveoli) in the lungs reduces the area
available for the exchange of oxygen and
carbon dioxide, causing the lung tissue to
swell. The term `emphysema' can also refer to
any abnormal swelling of body tissues caused
by the accumulation of air. Emphysema is most
often seen at an advanced stage of chronic
bronchitis, although it may develop in other
long-standing diseases of the lungs.
